Terms of Service

Please read these terms carefully before using RetireCiv. By accessing the calculator, you agree to be bound by these terms.

Acceptance of Terms

These Terms of Service (the “Terms”) form a binding agreement between you and RetireCiv (“RetireCiv,” “we,” “us,” or “our”). By accessing or using RetireCiv (the “Service”), you agree to be bound by these Terms. If you do not agree to all of these Terms, you may not use the Service.

These Terms apply to all visitors, users, and others who access or use RetireCiv, including its retirement calculator, readiness scoring, action plan features, and any paid subscription tiers.

Section 19 (Governing Law & Disputes) contains a binding individual arbitration clause and a class-action waiver. Please read it carefully; it affects your legal rights.

Eligibility & Account Registration

You must be at least 18 years old and a resident of the United States to use the Service. By using the Service, you represent and warrant that you meet these requirements and that the information you provide during registration is accurate and complete.

If you create an account to access Pro features, you agree to:

  • Maintain one account per person and not share access credentials
  • Keep your password confidential and secure
  • Promptly notify us of any unauthorized use of your account
  • Provide accurate billing information and keep it current

We may suspend or terminate accounts that violate these requirements, including accounts registered with false information.

Description of Service

RetireCiv is a web-based retirement planning calculator designed specifically for federal employees covered under the Federal Employees Retirement System (FERS) and Civil Service Retirement System (CSRS).

The Service provides:

  • Estimates of FERS and CSRS pension annuity benefits
  • Thrift Savings Plan (TSP) projections and contribution analysis
  • Social Security benefit estimates for federal employees
  • A Readiness Score assessing retirement preparedness
  • A personalized Action Plan with prioritized recommendations
  • Scenario comparison and what-if analysis tools

The Service is currently in active development. Features, formulas, and outputs may change without notice.

Free Tier & Pro Subscriptions

The Service is offered in two tiers. The Free Tier provides the wizard, basic retirement calculations, and the Readiness Score, and does not require an account. The Pro Tier unlocks scenario comparison, Monte Carlo analysis, the mortgage planner, the personalized action plan, downloadable PDF reports, and other advanced features, and requires a paid subscription.

Pro subscriptions are billed monthly or annually in U.S. dollars at the rates posted on the pricing page at the time of purchase. We may change Pro pricing at any time; existing subscribers will be notified at least 30 days before a price change takes effect at their next renewal.

Billing, Auto-Renewal & Cancellation

All payments are processed by Stripe, Inc. By subscribing to Pro, you authorize us (through Stripe) to charge your designated payment method for the subscription fee at the start of each billing period.

Automatic Renewal

Your Pro subscription will automatically renew at the end of each billing period (monthly or annual, as selected) at the then-current price, until you cancel. You can cancel at any time from your account settings.

Cancellation takes effect at the end of your current billing period. You will retain access to Pro features through the end of the paid period and will not be charged again. We do not provide prorated refunds for partial billing periods, except as required by law (see Refund Policy).

If a payment fails, we may suspend Pro access until the issue is resolved. You remain responsible for any amounts owed.

Refund Policy

We offer a 14-day refund on your first Pro subscription purchase. If you are unsatisfied within 14 days of your initial Pro charge, contact us at support@retireciv.com for a full refund.

After the 14-day window, and for all subsequent renewal charges, payments are non-refundable except where required by applicable law. Residents of California, the European Union, the United Kingdom, and other jurisdictions with mandatory consumer-protection rights retain all rights granted under their local law, and nothing in these Terms waives those rights.

Permitted Use

RetireCiv is intended for personal, non-commercial use by current and former federal employees, their spouses, and financial advisors assisting federal clients.

You agree not to:

  • Reproduce, distribute, or resell outputs of the Service for commercial purposes
  • Reverse engineer, scrape, or systematically extract data from the Service
  • Use the Service to provide financial planning services to others without appropriate licensure
  • Circumvent, disable, or otherwise interfere with security features of the Service
  • Transmit malicious code, viruses, or disruptive data to the Service
  • Use the Service to violate any applicable law or regulation
  • Impersonate another person or misrepresent your affiliation with any person or entity

User Content & Feedback

You retain full ownership of all data you enter into the Service. As described in Data & Privacy, your retirement inputs are stored only in your browser and never transmitted to us, so we acquire no rights in them.

If you send us feedback, suggestions, bug reports, or feature requests (“Feedback”), you grant us a perpetual, irrevocable, worldwide, royalty-free, sublicensable license to use, modify, and incorporate that Feedback into the Service or any other product without any obligation to compensate or credit you.

Intellectual Property

The Service, including the RetireCiv name, logo, source code, design, written content, calculation methodology, and all related materials, is owned by RetireCiv and is protected by U.S. and international copyright, trademark, and other intellectual-property laws.

Subject to your compliance with these Terms, we grant you a limited, non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable license to access and use the Service for your personal retirement planning. This license does not include any right to copy, modify, distribute, sell, lease, or create derivative works from the Service or its content.

Third-Party Services

The Service relies on third-party providers, including:

  • Supabase: authentication and account storage
  • Stripe: payment processing and subscription management
  • Vercel: hosting and content delivery
  • Sentry: error monitoring (scrubbed of sensitive data)

Your use of features that interact with these providers is also subject to their respective terms of service and privacy policies. We are not responsible for the acts or omissions of third-party providers, including outages, security incidents, or changes to their services.

Data & Privacy

Retirement-planning inputs you enter (salary, service history, TSP balance, expenses, etc.) are stored locally in your browser's storage; they never leave your device. Account credentials, if you create one to access Pro features, are managed by Supabase; billing data is handled by Stripe. We never see or store your raw retirement data.

Local-first storage

Your retirement inputs stay in your browser via localStorage. We do not receive or store them on our servers.

Account optional

An account is only needed to unlock Pro features and manage your subscription. Free-tier planning requires no account.

Clear your data anytime

Use your browser's site-data controls, or the app's built-in reset, to clear all retirement data instantly; nothing to delete on our side.

Billing handled by Stripe

All payments are processed by Stripe (PCI DSS Level 1). We never see or store raw card numbers.

For full details on how we handle data, please review our Privacy Policy.

No Financial, Legal, or Tax Advice: No Fiduciary Relationship

Important: Please Read Carefully

RetireCiv provides estimates for informational and educational purposes only. Nothing on this platform constitutes financial, legal, tax, or investment advice, and no fiduciary, advisory, or attorney-client relationship is formed by your use of the Service.

We are not a registered investment adviser, broker-dealer, financial planner, attorney, certified public accountant, insurance agent, or other regulated professional. We do not assess your individual circumstances, recommend specific investments, or provide personalized advice of any kind.

All calculations are based on publicly available OPM, SSA, and TSP formulas as of the date of last update. Your actual benefits will be determined by the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) and may differ from estimates based on:

  • Your specific service history, pay records, and employment agency
  • Interim regulatory changes or legislative updates
  • Errors or omissions in data you enter
  • Special circumstances not covered by standard FERS/CSRS rules (e.g., dual compensation, reemployed annuitants)

Always consult your agency HR office, OPM, or a licensed financial professional before making retirement decisions.

Disclaimer of Warranties

The Service is provided “as is” and “as available,” without warranties of any kind, whether express, implied, or statutory.

To the maximum extent permitted by law, we disclaim all warranties, including but not limited to implied warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, accuracy, non-infringement, and any warranties arising from course of dealing or usage of trade. We do not warrant that the Service will be uninterrupted, error-free, secure, or that calculations will produce results that match those of OPM, the SSA, or any other authority.

Limitation of Liability

To the maximum extent permitted by applicable law, RetireCiv and its officers, directors, employees, and agents shall not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, exemplary, or punitive damages, including but not limited to:

  • Loss of income or retirement benefits resulting from reliance on Service estimates
  • Errors in calculations due to regulatory changes or data entry mistakes
  • Interruptions, bugs, or downtime affecting your use of the Service
  • Unauthorized access to locally stored browser data
  • Lost profits, lost data, or business interruption

Our total aggregate liability arising out of or relating to these Terms or the Service shall not exceed the greater of (a) the total fees you have paid to us in the twelve (12) months preceding the event giving rise to the claim, or (b) one hundred U.S. dollars (US $100).

Some jurisdictions do not allow the exclusion or limitation of certain damages. In those jurisdictions, our liability is limited to the smallest extent permitted by law. Nothing in these Terms limits liability for gross negligence, willful misconduct, or any other liability that cannot be excluded by law.

Indemnification

You agree to indemnify, defend, and hold harmless RetireCiv and its officers, directors, employees, and agents from and against any claims, liabilities, damages, losses, and expenses (including reasonable attorneys' fees) arising out of or in any way connected with:

  • Your use or misuse of the Service
  • Your breach of these Terms
  • Your violation of any law or the rights of a third party
  • Your reliance on any output of the Service in making financial or legal decisions

Termination

You may stop using the Service at any time. If you have an account, you may delete it through your account settings; deletion is permanent and removes your account credentials and subscription record from our systems (your retirement data, which lives only in your browser, can be cleared via your browser's site-data controls or the in-app reset).

We may suspend or terminate your access to the Service, with or without notice, if we reasonably believe you have violated these Terms, if required by law, or if continued provision of the Service to you is no longer commercially viable. Where practical, we will provide reasonable advance notice.

Sections that by their nature should survive termination, including Intellectual Property, Disclaimer of Warranties, Limitation of Liability, Indemnification, and Governing Law & Disputes, will survive termination.

Electronic Communications

By using the Service or creating an account, you consent to receive communications from us electronically, including by email or through notices posted within the Service. You agree that all agreements, notices, disclosures, and other communications we provide electronically satisfy any legal requirement that such communications be in writing.

Electronic communications include account-related messages (receipts, password resets, security alerts), changes to these Terms or our Privacy Policy, and service-status notifications. You may opt out of non-essential marketing emails at any time using the unsubscribe link in those messages; you cannot opt out of transactional account messages while you maintain an account.

Changes to Terms

We reserve the right to modify these Terms at any time. When changes are made, the “Last Updated” date at the top of this page will be revised.

Continued use of the Service after changes are posted constitutes your acceptance of the revised Terms. We encourage you to review these Terms periodically.

Material changes, such as those affecting data handling, paid-plan billing, or your legal rights, will be communicated through a notice on the Service and, where you have an account, by email at least 14 days before taking effect.

Governing Law & Dispute Resolution

These Terms are governed by the laws of the United States, without regard to conflict-of-laws principles. The United Nations Convention on Contracts for the International Sale of Goods does not apply.

Binding Individual Arbitration & Class-Action Waiver

You and RetireCiv agree to resolve any dispute arising out of or relating to these Terms or the Service through binding individual arbitration, not in court, and you waive any right to participate in a class action, class arbitration, or representative proceeding.

Arbitration will be administered by the American Arbitration Association (AAA) under its Consumer Arbitration Rules. The arbitration will be conducted in the U.S. county where you reside, or by telephone or video conference at your option. The arbitrator's decision is final and binding, and judgment on the award may be entered in any court of competent jurisdiction.

Carve-outs. Either party may bring an individual action in small-claims court for disputes within that court's jurisdiction. Either party may also seek injunctive or equitable relief in court to protect intellectual-property rights.

30-day opt-out. You may opt out of this arbitration agreement by sending written notice to support@retireciv.com within 30 days of first accepting these Terms. Your notice must include your name, the email associated with your account, and a clear statement that you wish to opt out of arbitration. Opting out does not affect any other provision of these Terms.

If the arbitration agreement is held unenforceable, any dispute will be resolved exclusively in a court of competent jurisdiction in the United States, and you consent to personal jurisdiction in that court.

Force Majeure

We will not be liable for any failure or delay in performance caused by circumstances beyond our reasonable control, including but not limited to acts of God, natural disasters, war, terrorism, civil unrest, labor disputes, government action, pandemics, internet or utility outages, or failures of third-party providers (such as Supabase, Stripe, or Vercel).

General Provisions

Entire agreement. These Terms, together with our Privacy Policy, constitute the entire agreement between you and RetireCiv regarding the Service and supersede any prior agreements.

Severability. If any provision of these Terms is held to be invalid or unenforceable, the remaining provisions will remain in full force and effect.

No waiver. Our failure to enforce any right or provision of these Terms is not a waiver of that right or provision.

Assignment. You may not assign or transfer these Terms or your rights under them without our prior written consent. We may assign these Terms without restriction, including in connection with a merger, acquisition, or sale of assets.

Notices. We may provide notices to you by email or through the Service. You may provide notices to us at support@retireciv.com.

Relationship. Nothing in these Terms creates any partnership, joint venture, employment, or agency relationship between you and RetireCiv.
